Stone House: A blend of landscape and architecture on the cliffs of Menorca

Stone is the element that weaves together the construction process of this home located in Menorca.

Designed by the architectural firm NOMO STUDIO, the Stone House in Menorca, Spain brings a harmonious blend of nature and architecture to homeowners looking for a retreat that seamlessly fits into the landscape. Created by Alicia Casals San Miguel and Karl Johan Nyqvist, the home features a unique stone façade that mimics the traditional stone that shapes the area. The stones used in the façade were carefully excavated from the house’s own foundation, showing the deep connection between the land and the structure.

Inside, the house’s layout is elegant and minimalist, arranged around a double-height space that visually connects both floors. Large windows welcome natural light, flooding the space despite the depth of the interior. TECHNAL windows, with their sleek frames, create an airy feel and allow a blend of indoor and outdoor spaces.

If you appreciate design that merges durability with elegance, the windows are set into the interior face of the wall, hiding the frames from the outside. This creates the illusion of deep, open vents in the stone wall, balancing the bold exterior with subtlety and sophistication.

To emphasise the contrast between the thickness of the façade and the slimness of the frames, all of the windows are aligned to the interior face of the wall. Their frames are hidden from the outside, creating an illusion of deep open vents in the stone façade.

Functionality meets style with TECHNAL sliding doors and windows, maximising the space and bringing a modernist feel throughout the home. The hidden frames allow the surrounding nature to take centre stage, while the minimalistic essence of the home creates a calm, uncluttered atmosphere.

The architects drew inspiration from the robust forms of ancestral architecture, building with contemporary, sustainable systems. A spacious porch, overlooking the cliffs and the Mediterranean Sea, acts as an extension of the interior, providing a perfect spot for social gatherings or quiet reflection. This porch adapts with the seasons: it’s an inviting, cosy gallery in winter and a shaded, open space in the summer, thanks to the thermal insulation of the double glazing.

Surrounded by native wild olive trees and lush local vegetation, the garden opens onto a large sandstone platform and a pool with ocean views. This seamless transition between architecture and landscape provides an inspiring, tranquil environment for those that wish to have a strong connection to nature in their home.
